I like to think I really know what I am doing. Look at my fresh picked radishes. Aren't they beautiful? But I still need to learn a lot about gardening.
Where I live in Missouri it is crazy. It is in the 40's at night and in the 80's at day time. The top layer of soil is always dry. I think most of my seedlings die of dryness before they get a start in life.
I must confess that I use a moisture meter. I have not yet mastered watering. The depth of moisture means a lot when determining when to water. So far things are looking good. It appears I know what I am doing. But if I'm ever wrong and do not water when the plant needs it, I'm screwed. It doesn't take long for a plants to die.
Buckets are tricky when they are in a pool of water. Too much water is as bad as none at all. Most of the year the plants in buckets can stay in the pool of water but in the spring I sometimes have to take them out of the pool.
Hay bales like it moist. They suck up the moisture and shed it off. Care must be taken to make sure they do not dry out. They usually always stay in the pool of water. I never put so much water in my kiddies pool that it stagnates (1" or so of water is enough). I do not want to raise mosquitoes.
Even though I get bogged down in all the details, gardening can be fun. Do the best you can and if you're like me, use a moisture meter.
